you can use a picture of your album as a profile backgorund if you want to

also about the chat: if you log in and wait a bit while some people are on the forums someone might probably join you

The image depends on the amount of posts you've made. If you reach a certain postcount it will change.

Also I have a question. Know how you have the little pic of the trainer with the pokeball right under your custom title? Well I was um wondering how you change it. Does it just change overtime?
