Default Activism

My thoughts on political activism is that it doesn't accomplish much, for a few reasons:

1) It legitimizes the system you are protesting against by acknowledging its authority over you. When most people complain about the actions of politicians, they speak in terms of what they should or shouldn't do, as if their power is legitimate in the first place. Immoral actions don't suddenly become okay if those in authority do them. Those actions are still wrong, and words on paper called "law" don't change that fact.

2) Politicians aren't really scared of people holding signs, because it's not threatening. Imagine a robber stealing from you and you responding by going to his house and standing outside with a sign that says "Give me my stuff back!" without actually trying to retrieve what he stole from you. If I was the robber, I wouldn't worry, because I'm not facing any repercussions.

What are your thoughts?

Politicians rely on the public in order to be in office; thieves don't rely on the public to steal.

Sometimes, but there are other factors such as connections and big donors. Either way, my point is that there is no reason laws should be obeyed simply because they are laws, as they are just words on paper.

However, you also bring up an important point: politicians are dependent on the majority of people believing that they should have power to actually have that power.

Sometimes activists can make a difference but for the most part, the politicians are bought and sold for by corporations and rich private donors.
