Default Team Building Help

I'm considering entering the Enter the Dragon Type competition.

I have no idea where to start to put together a competitive team.
I've always on played in game and could usually muddle through.

I don't understand the terms used in competitive team discussions: sweepers, walls, etc.

I don't really care or don't know enough to care about OU, UU and the rest of that.

Will someone give me a place to start?
I know I have to have a Dragon.
Then I'm thinking Fairy or Ice to deal with Dragons.
Then I'm thinking Steal or Poison to deal with Fairy.

Or am I going about this wrong?

Hey LLR, I can quickly explain the terms you mentioned!

Sweeper = a Pokemon powerful enough to go through most of your opponents' teams by fainting them fairly easily, usually after setting up.

Setting up = Using stat-boosting moves such as Swords Dance, Dragon Dance, Bulk Up and Shell Smash. Depending on which Pokemon is being used, each has their pros and cons, since setting up gives your opponent a chance to prepare as well.

Wall = A Pokemon that is mostly purely defensive to take hits well, such as Blissey with very high HP and Special Defense stats. Another term for this is "tank" or "tanking" a move(s).

OU, NU etc. are tiers of Pokemon primarily based on their strength and potential, and the most popular tiers used are determined by the Pokemon site Smogon. For example, both Volcarona and Salamence are in the BL (Borderline) tier, but Salamence's Mega Evolution is an Uber because of its stat boosts and great ability.

As for the Dragon contest, I'm not sure what the specific rules are, such as only purely Dragon-types being allowed, some second types allowed but not others and so on. Were the rules posted when you figured out about it?

Feel free to ask any more questions or for clarification on some of the information I included!

Ah okay, that's a nice variety they are allowing you then. I know that Ampharos and Sceptile Mega-evolve into Dragon-types, and Ampharos has an amazing Special Attack stat with good HP and defenses all around. If you want a well-bred Mareep egg, just ask me and I can get one for you by tomorrow!

Have you thought about any Pokemon you want in your team yet?

Ok lets start with Ampharos.
Who else would you suggest?

The way I think I would want someone to cover Ampharos weakness...Ice, Ground and Fairy.

So that could be a Fighting, Water, Grass, Poison, Steel type or at least a Pokémon that can learn those kind of moves.

Edit:
Maybe a Steel or Water type

Fighting is also weak to Fairy
Poison is also weak to Ground
Grass is also weak to Ice

Swampert has pretty decent stats with a nice move pool as well, covering several types. It can learn Ice Punch for Dragon, Flying, Ground and Grass types, Waterfall, Brick Break etc. There are so many options that it's hard to choose though, so I would go with Pokemon you are already familiar with. :P

Aegislash will be a very good Xerneas check if you get it in at the right time.

I'm thinking M-Ampharos Modest Volt Switch, Discharge, Power Gem and Dragon Pulse.
Wigglytuff Timid Competitive Ice Beam, Thunderbolt, Flamethrower and Dazzling Gleam.

Then I can't decide between Shuckle, Swampert, Aegislish or Escavalier.

Now I think about it, banded adamant Scizor w/Bullet Punch is also a decent Xerneas check. Aegislash has the advantage of not being affected by Rapid Spin, though.

Not going to go for any entry hazard setters?

If I decide on Shuckle the moves will be Sticky Web and Stealth Rock.
Those are entry hazards correct?
